🍞 Bread Fritters Recipe | Crispy Indian Tea-Time Snack
✨ Bread Fritters – The Perfect Crispy Tea-Time Snack
Introduction:
Bread fritters, also called Bread Pakoras, are a beloved Indian snack that pairs beautifully with a cup of hot chai.
Made with day-old bread dipped in spiced gram flour batter and deep-fried until golden, they’re crisp outside and soft inside.
This snack is ideal for rainy evenings or cozy gatherings. From an Ayurvedic view, these fritters provide instant energy and, when prepared with healthy oil, can balance Vata dosha in cold or windy weather.
🧄 Ingredients:
For the Batter:
-
Besan (gram flour) – 1 cup
-
Rice flour – 2 tbsp (for extra crispiness)
-
Red chili powder – ½ tsp
-
Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
-
Ajwain (carom seeds) – ¼ tsp
-
Salt – to taste
-
Water – as needed (for medium-thick batter)
Other Ingredients:
-
Bread slices – 4 (white, wheat, or multigrain)
-
Oil – for deep frying
(Optional Filling – for stuffed version)
-
Boiled potato – 1
-
Green chili – 1 (chopped)
-
Coriander leaves – 1 tbsp (chopped)
-
Chat masala – a pinch
-
Salt – to taste
🫕 Method:
-
Prepare Batter:
In a bowl, mix besan, rice flour, chili powder, turmeric, ajwain, and salt. Add water gradually to make a smooth batter. -
Prepare Filling (optional):
Mash boiled potato with salt, chili, coriander, and chat masala. Spread between two bread slices to make a sandwich. -
Dip and Fry:
Cut the bread (plain or stuffed) into halves or triangles. Dip each piece in batter and deep fry in medium-hot oil until golden and crisp. -
Drain:
Remove and place on tissue paper to absorb excess oil. -
Serve:
Serve hot with mint chutney, tamarind chutney, or tomato ketchup.
🌿 Tips:
-
Use cold-pressed groundnut or coconut oil for frying — healthier and easier to digest.
-
Best enjoyed during monsoon or evening time to pacify Vata dosha.
-
Avoid reheating fried foods; serve fresh and warm.
