Rasam — the heart of South Indian comfort food — is a light, tangy, and spicy soup made with tamarind, tomato, and aromatic spices.
In Ayurveda, rasam is celebrated for its digestive and detoxifying properties. It stimulates appetite, enhances gut health, and warms the body — perfect for rainy days or when you’re feeling low on energy.
Ingredients:

Tamarind – small lemon-sized ball (soaked in 1 cup warm water)

Tomato – 1 large (chopped)

Toor dal (optional) – 2 tbsp (cooked and mashed)

Rasam powder – 1½ tsp

Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp

Black pepper powder – ¼ tsp

Cumin powder – ¼ tsp

Salt – to taste

Water – 3 cups
For Tempering (Tadka):

Ghee or sesame oil – 1 tsp

Mustard seeds – ½ tsp

Cumin seeds – ½ tsp

Dry red chili – 1

Crushed garlic – 2 cloves

Curry leaves – 1 sprig

Asafoetida (hing) – a pinch

Coriander leaves – for garnish
Method:

Soak & extract tamarind juice: Soak tamarind in warm water for 10 minutes. Squeeze and strain the pulp.

Prepare rasam base: In a pan, add tamarind extract, tomato, turmeric, salt, and rasam powder. Add water and bring to boil.

Add dal (optional): Mix in cooked toor dal for a thicker texture.

Simmer: Cook for 7–8 minutes until the raw smell of tamarind fades.

Prepare tempering: Heat ghee, add mustard seeds, cumin, garlic, red chili, curry leaves, and hing.

Combine: Pour the tempering over rasam and mix.

Garnish: Sprinkle coriander leaves and switch off the flame.
