EASY UNAKKA PAYAR THORAN/ RED CHORI/ DRY RED BEANS THORAN

  • 🍲 Easy Unakka Payar Upperi | Red Chori / Dry Red Beans Stir Fry Kerala Style






    Unakka Payar Upperi, also known as Red Chori Stir Fry or Dry Red Beans Upperi, is a traditional and nutritious side dish from Kerala. This simple recipe uses dry red beans, coconut, and mild spices to create a wholesome accompaniment for rice or kanji (rice gruel).

    It’s a staple comfort food in many Kerala homes, especially because it’s protein-rich, easy to prepare, and full of flavor. With just a handful of ingredients and less effort, this dish is perfect for everyday meals.


    🫘 Ingredients

    • 1 cup Unakka Payar / Dry Red Beans (Red Chori)

    • 2 tbsp coconut oil

    • 1 tsp mustard seeds

    • 1 sprig curry leaves

    • 2 dry red chilies

    • 1 onion, chopped (optional)

    • 2–3 green chilies, slit

    • 1 tsp turmeric powder

    • ½ tsp red chili powder

    • ½ cup grated coconut

    • Salt to taste


    📝 Method

    1. Wash and soak the dry red beans overnight (or at least 6–8 hours).

    2. Pressure cook the beans with enough water and salt until soft but not mushy.

    3. Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.

    4. Add dry red chilies, curry leaves, onion, and green chilies. Sauté until light golden.

    5. Add turmeric powder and red chili powder. Stir well.

    6. Add the cooked beans and toss gently.

    7. Finally, add grated coconut and sauté for 2–3 minutes until well combined.

    8. Serve warm with rice or kanji.

    • A healthy side dish for Kerala sadhya-style meals.

    • Can also be enjoyed with chapati or dosa.
