π² Simple Unakka Payar Upperi Without Mustard | Kerala-Style Red Chori / Dry Red Beans Stir Fry
In Kerala homes, Unakka Payar Upperi (dry red beans stir fry) is a nostalgic dish often paired with kanji (rice gruel) or rice. While some recipes use mustard seeds and coconut, this minimal version uses just shallots, garlic, onions, and curry leaves for a rustic, homely flavor.
This dish is light, protein-rich, and packed with earthy aromas. With just a handful of ingredients, it makes for a wholesome and comforting side dish for everyday meals.
π« Ingredients
- 
1 cup Unakka Payar / Dry Red Beans (Red Chori) 
- 
2 tbsp coconut oil 
- 
6–8 shallots, sliced (or 1 small onion) 
- 
4 garlic cloves, sliced 
- 
1 sprig curry leaves 
- 
2 green chilies, slit 
- 
½ tsp turmeric powder 
- 
½ tsp red chili powder (adjust to taste) 
- 
Salt to taste 
π Method
- 
Wash and soak the dry red beans overnight (or at least 6–8 hours). 
- 
Pressure cook with salt and enough water until beans are soft but not mushy. Drain excess water. 
- 
Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add shallots, garlic, onion slices, curry leaves, and green chilies. SautΓ© until golden and fragrant. 
- 
Add turmeric powder and red chili powder. Mix well. 
- 
Add the cooked beans and stir-fry until evenly coated with masala. 
- 
Adjust salt and cook on low flame for 3–4 minutes. 
- 
Serve warm with rice or kanji.
