🍌 Layered Banana Puttu – A Soft, Sweet, Steamed Delight

This layered version of banana puttu adds slices of ripe banana between layers of rice flour and coconut, all steamed together to create a soft, flavorful, and aromatic treat. Ingredients (Serves 2–3)

  • Rice flour – 1 cup

  • Ripe banana – 1 medium, sliced

  • Grated coconut – 1 cup (divided into two portions)

  • Water – as required

  • Ghee – 1 tbsp (optional, for flavor)

  • Jaggery powder or honey – 1–2 tbsp (optional, depending on sweetness)


Preparation Steps

1. Prepare the rice flour mixture

  • In a mixing bowl, combine rice flour and a pinch of salt.

  • Sprinkle water gradually and mix until the flour is crumbly but holds shape when pressed.

2. Add cardamom flavor

  • Mix in cardamom powder for a warm, aromatic flavor.

3. Layer the puttu

  • Grease the puttu maker or steaming container lightly with ghee.

  • Layer with grated coconut first, followed by a layer of rice flour mixture.

  • Add a layer of sliced ripe banana.

  • Add another layer of grated coconut, then more rice flour.

  • Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of grated coconut on top.

4. Steam the puttu

  • Steam for 10–12 minutes until fully cooked. The banana slices should be soft and infused with the flavors of coconut and cardamom.

5. Serve

  • Carefully remove the steamed puttu and fluff it gently with a fork.

  • Drizzle with ghee or serve with warm coconut milk and jaggery syrup for extra richness.
